QuidelOrtho Team Members Are Getting Certified in Lean Through Uber Freight

Starting the week of November 28, QuidelOrtho began certifying 16 cross-functional team members in Lean through Uber Freight. The blended format training uses online coursework, a virtual group coaching and a project.

QuidelOrtho is applying for Ohio TechCred funding for the 12-week training. TechCred helps Ohioans learn new skills and employers build a stronger workforce with the skills needed in a technology-infused economy. Employers who submit successful applications will be reimbursed up to $2,000 per credential when current or prospective employees complete eligible technology-focused credentials.

QuidelOrtho team members will learn a foundational understanding of supply chain terms, equipment and work process flow. They’ll also be introduced to the concepts of Lean management in order to identify and quantify supply chain wastes. They will then use Lean methodology and tools in a practical application to reinforce key concepts and solve real business problem scenarios. Students will learn how to uncover hidden waste, define a problem, discover its root cause(s), learn what solutions work best for different types of problems, prioritize improvements, successfully launch improvements and use PDCA management systems to sustain improvements.

The QuidelOrtho team members participating consist of leadership and staff members from quality control, quality assurance, operations, engineering, supply chain, purchasing and planning, packaging, and warehouse shipping and receiving. “Like all organizations, we anticipate real-world situations here in Athens and will use our training to create solutions,” remarked Phil McLellan, senior vice president, operations.

Should the course prove to be successful, QuidelOrtho could plan for additional future training sessions.

If you have questions about this training, or how your company might take advantage of Ohio’s TechCred program, please contact Appalachian Ohio Manufacturers’ Coalition director, James Ruble at director@aomanufacturers.org.
