Start with the manufacturers….it works!
Data about job availability in Ohio does not paint the true manufacturing picture in rural, southeast Ohio counties. We are different from our urban and suburban counterparts.
AOMC's sole focus is to identify industry needs, implement strategies to meet those needs, and to build a ready and skilled workforce for the future in southeast Ohio.
In the identifying process, patterns have begun to emerge.
Key common skill needs were identified across industries, as well as methods to ensure competencies were validated.
Another emergent need is to increase the awareness of successful careers in manufacturing and related industries. High school students do not know that manufacturing has changed since their grandparent’s time.
Machining, maintenance, and instrumentation and electricity are valued, high-wage careers. These career areas are facing challenges due to anticipated retirements in the near and longer term future.
More specifically, machinist skills, which include competencies that are basic to all aspects of industrial careers, are taught in very few places.
